Nokia’s Steven Elop Likes The Microsoft Surface Tablet

Updated on

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) chief executive officer, Steven Elop, has high expectations for the Windows Surface Tablet.

During  a recent investors’ call, Elop explained that the upcoming tablet could be a “stimulant to the ecosystem”. He further claimed  is Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) encouraging companies like Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), and HTC Corp (TPE:2498) to design gadgets that improve the environment. There have also been rumors in the last few months that Microsoft would eventually make their own Surface brand phones. A move like this might be good for the company, but it might also be bad for their current partnership with Nokia.

Elop also mentioned that their labs still have some “unpolished gems” that will allow them to discern between their phones. He said, “We’re very proud of the unique differentiation that we are bringing to the Windows Phone platform. It’s not something that’s easily replicated, or reinvented, or anything like that.”

It’s a little alarming that Elop isn’t too concerned with Windows Surface. Although it’s easy to write off the upcoming Surface as just another tablet, it is important to note that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) could change the tablet industry, if their tablet proves to be a success. If Surface manages a successful launch, and sells well, it is likely that Microsoft will either drop, or buy up Nokia.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) is gearing up to release the Lumia 820 and 920. Both phones will run on Windows 8 operating systems. The Lumia 820 is a mid-priced model, and it features a 4.3 inch, OLED display, LTE connectivity, 1.5 GHz, and 8  megapixel front-facing camera. The phone will also come with a range of back shells, in a variety of colors, including yellow and red.  The Lumia 920 features a 4.5  inch curved glass display, 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm Krait CPU, and 8.7 megapixel PureView camera. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) will sell the phones exclusively for now.

Nokia’s main concern for now should be  promoting their new line of Nokia phones.
