Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V)’s Lumia 929 Windows Phone has been awaited for some time, with the forthcoming mobile seemingly destined for Verizon Wireless. Although the release date of the handset has yet to be confirmed, a fair bit of information is now available via either rumor or leak.
The most recent piece of information to come out regarding the Lumia 929 were images of an apparent accessory dubbed the ‘Armour Stand Case’ which has enabled analysts to piece together a probable impression of how the Nokia device will look when its released. However, lots of other information has either seeped out or been prognosticated by experts, so here are some ideas regarding what we can expect from this smartphone when it is released.
Nokia Lumia 929 dimensions and weight
Leaked material has suggested that the Nokia Lumia 929 will measure precisely 136.5 x 71.4 x 10.5 mm (5.37 x 2.81 x 0.41 in), and be 166g (5.86 oz) in weight.
Nokia Lumia 929 display
This is the key aspect of any smartphone device, and thus the Lumia 929 will at least partly be judged on its ability to deliver the highest quality of visuals. It has been rumored that the Lumia 929 will embrace an AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) capacitive touchscreen, capable of displaying 16 million colors. As is de rigueur nowadays, this will be a fully HD screen comprising 1080 x 1920 pixels, and it appears that Nokia is attempting to follow the lead of the rumored iPhone 6 by manufacturing a 5-inch screen.
Memory
Apparently there will be no card slot in the Nokia Lumia 929, at least according to information that has been leaked thus far, but it seems clear that Nokia is going to circumvent the smallest storage capacity of the previous generation of iPhones by giving the budget Lumia 929 32Gb worth of storage as standard. Whether there will be more premium versions of the device which have a lot more storage remains to be seen, but this would seem to be highly likely.
Processing and performance speeds
This is where things get a little bit technical. Both proposed HSDPA and HSUPA rates have been published for the Lumia 929. High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is an enhanced 3G (third-generation) mobile-telephony communications protocol, while High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) is a 3G mobile telephony protocol which was created by Nokia. The presumed HSDPA speed of the Lumia 929 is rumored to be 42.2 Mbps, while the HSUPA rate is expected to be 5.76 Mbps. It will also apparently be capable of an upload rate of 50 Mbps and a download rate of 150 Mbps.
The Lumia 929 will also have 2Gb of internal RAM when it is released, making it a potentially powerful and speedy performer.
Wi-Fi and connectivity details
Version 4.0 of Bluetooth will apparently be included with this handset, which perhaps suggests a release date that will be sooner rather than later, with new iterations of Bluetooth appearing pretty regularly. MicroUSB version 2.0 will also be a part of the device, and according to the plans that have been leaked the Lumia 929 will support NFC. This seems highly likely as Nokia has been very supportive of, and intimately involved with, this technology which is often associated with mobile payments.
The Wi-Fi details are that the Lumia 929 will utilize Wi-Fi 802.11, with a dual-band set-up that is intended to be particularly seamlessly compatible with Wi-Fi hotspots.
Nokia Lumia 929 camera
The camera contained in the Lumia 929 appears to be a particular area of focus, with rumors indicating that the device will contain a 20 megapixel camera. This would be an incredibly high-quality camera to put in a mobile, and far superior to the one contained in either the existing iPhone or the purported one contained in the iPhone 6. The camera will also feature Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, autofocus, dual-LED flash, PureView technology, dual capture, geo-tagging, face detection and a panorama feature. It is expected that it will be possible to shoot 1080p video with the Lumia 929 as well.
CPU and chipset
There is a pretty nifty processor at the heart of the Lumia 929, with indications pointing to a Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400. The chipset included in the device is likely to be the Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800, details about the phone indicating that it should perform particularly well for a phone in its price range.
Operating system and browser
As this is a Microsoft Windows phone, the Lumia 929 will run the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 Black operating system, while it is rumored that the Lumia 929 has an HTML5 browser.
Music playback
The Lumia 929 will be a pretty flexible music player, with MP3, WMA, WAV, eAAC, MP4, DivX, XviD and WMV playback capability. The device will also include active noise cancellation with a dedicated microphone included, and 7 Gb of free SkyDrive storage will also enable users to store a lot of their favorite songs on the Lumia 929.
Release date
A February release had been rumored for this device, but this is now looking less likely. We may hear an announcement during the Consumer Electronics Show in the next few days. Certainly a Q1 or Q2 release is to be expected, with a new iPhone due to be released later this year.
Nokia Lumia 929 price
This has not been officially confirmed, but this looks likely to be a fairly affordable mobile, with a possible price tag of $199.
