Netflix, Amazon Marked Their Presence At Golden Globes

Updated on

Netflix had a starry evening at the Golden Globe Awards with House of Cards actor Kevin Spacy winning the category for Best Actor in a Drama Series. The online video streaming company’s original shows were nominated for a total of seven categories, including Best Comedy and Best Drama.

Amazon topped Netflix

Another original show, Orange is the New Black, was nominated in three categories: Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, but they could not win any awards. House of Cards was also nominated for Best TV Drama but lost.

The award show was much more special for Amazon, which gave a startling performance when it took home two awards in the Best Comedy Series category for Transparent. Moreover, the company succeeded in beating Netflix in the categories in which both were competing, says a report from TechCrunch. Amazon’s Transparent is a show about a transgender parent starring Jeffrey Tambor, who won Best Actor in TV Comedy (beating Ricky Gervais in Netflix’s Derek). Also Transparent bagged an award for Best Comedy Series against Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black and HBO’s Girls and Silicon Valley.

Amazon did win the most significant awards, but even if this was not the case, the nominations alone would have meant a great success for Amazon, as the company failed to register even a single spot in the nominations last year.

Much-needed recognition for online streaming services

Companies like Netflix and Amazon need more recognition across the world, and these awards are doing exactly that. Since the shows that are winning accolades and awards are available online exclusively, viewers who are not Netflix or Amazon subscribers may feel pressured to subscribe for the membership to get a glimpse of them.

The Golden Globes and Emmys are positive catalysts for Netflix, as the streaming video company wants to expand globally. Last year Netflix was nominated in 31 categories at the Emmy Awards.

Just like Netflix, other players such as Amazon and Hulu are also marching ahead with their original content and attractive subscription plans to beat back the competition. For Amazon, winning accolades at the Golden Globes is the proof that it not only distributes content but also creates content liked by audiences.
