Neil deGrasse Tyson Doesn’t Care About UFOs

Updated on

With the recent release of information about the Pentagon researching UFOs, there’s a lot of hype regarding their potential existence. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson isn’t buying it, however.

The Pentagon UFO Program

A recent extensive article released by the New York Times went into great detail about a secret program that had been running out of the Pentagon for years — focused entirely on researching UFOs.

Created by two senators and funded through an off-the-books discretionary military account, this agency ran for decades and investigated thousands of so-called alien interactions. While the majority of these UFOs turned out to be nothing, there are still several hundred encounters with no explanation.

UFOs have always been a staple of popular culture, but until now, UFO enthusiasts have been regarded as a little bit wacky at best. While the existence of these flying objects is not necessarily a confirmation of alien interference, it’s clear that the United States government recognizes that there are occurrences out there that cannot be explained — and these events were significant enough to dedicate a division to studying it.

Despite these recent leaks that give us insight into the secret program, there’s no doubt much more information that the public isn’t aware of. Does the United States government have information regarding alien life that they refuse to share? Neil deGrasse Tyson doesn’t know, or frankly, care.

The Existence of UFOs

In a discussion with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota, Neil Degrasse Tyson explained how the fact that the Pentagon has researched UFOs doesn’t necessarily change his views when it comes to alien life.

“Call me when you have a dinner invite from an alien…The evidence is so paltry for aliens to visit Earth, I have no further interest.”

The whole idea behind UFOs is the fact that they’re unidentified, but that doesn’t necessarily mean some sort of alien visitor. A recent video released by the Department of Defense that showed a UFO off of the coast of San Diego doesn’t shock or surprise Neil Degrasse Tyson.

“The universe brims with mysteries. Just because you don’t know what it is you’re looking at doesn’t mean it’s intelligent aliens visiting from another planet…Scientists live in mystery every day of our lives … People are uncomfortable not knowing, not the scientists. I’m fine. We don’t know what it is. Keep checking it out.

Addressing the recent renewed interest in the subject after the reveal of the Pentagon’s secret program, Neil deGrasse Tyson is happy such an organization exists.

“It’s a flying object and we don’t know what it is. I would hope somebody’s checking it out!”

While leading astrophysicists like Tyson aren’t convinced that UFOs are necessarily worth fussing over, this new revelation reinforces the fact that there is much about our universe that we can’t explain. Whether these mystery flyers have an earthly explanation or are alien visitors we may never know, but we may learn more as further information about the Pentagon’s program continues to come to light.
