The Mobile World Congress has been taking place for the last couple of days in Barcelona, and there have been plenty of interesting products unveiled so far. Here we look at some of the highlights thus far:

Nokia X

Having been sold to Microsoft Coporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) a few months back, Nokia is trying to get back to the heady days when it was the world’s biggest seller of smartphones. The company used the Barcelona show to launch its first Android phones, with three slightly different models all being placed under the Nokia X banner. It is intended for the devices to particularly gain penetration into emerging markets, and the success or otherwise of the Nokia X range will be worth keeping an eye on come March when Microsoft takes over the day-to-day operations of the company.

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S5 can be viewed as a more downbeat offering than some of its previous Galaxy devices, with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) having the clear aim of producing a phone which is as slick as its Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) competitors. Faster Wi-Fi, a high-quality camera, improved signal coverage, a heartbeat monitor and fingerprint functionality are among this inevitable multi-million seller’s armory.

Sony Xperia Z2

Sony Corporation (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758) is enjoying a blossoming period. After a difficult time in their history, the company which produced such iconic and world-changing devices as the Walkman and the original Playstation has regained some of its luster. The Playstation 4 is selling extremely well, and the Sony Xperia Z1 was very well received indeed. Thus, the fact that the new Z2 which Sony launched at the Mobile World Congress sports the latest Qualcomm processor could make it an even more attractive proposition to smartphone buyers than the Z1. Early indications are that this will be one of the fastest and most advanced Android phones of 2014.

Huawei MediaPad X1

Huawei Technology Co Ltd (SHE:002502) is not exactly a household name in the West yet, but the Chinese company is a significant manufacturer of smartphones and tablets in East Asia, and will be a coming force in the marketplace as manufacturers from the emerging economies become more prominent. The Huawei MediaPad X1, which was unveiled in Barcelona, is an extremely impressive tablet that will undoubtedly find favor with anyone who gets the chance to try one out. With a fantastically slick display, a slim build, 4G LTE capabilities and aggressive pricing, this tablet could establish Huawei in the North American and European markets.

The Hewlett-Packard ElitePad 1000

Hewlett-Packard ElitePad 1000

The traditional PC manufacturers have not really tapped into the tablet market to the degree that one might have expected as of yet, but at the Mobile World Congress Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) unveiled an enterprise lineup of Windows tablets which it hopes will change this. The ElitePad 1000 is a Windows 8.1 tablet clearly aimed at the corporate client, but with a distinctly fun element included as well. With full-sized HDMI ports, multiple accessories, 64-bit Intel processors, dual cameras and enterprise IT integration software, this is a pretty spectacular performer and could do well at the high end of the tablet marketplace.
