More Apple Inc. iPhone Customers Switch From Android In 2013

More iPhone customers have made the switch from Android, a number that increased from last year. New research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners shows that during last year’s launch of the iPhone 5, 16% of iPhone 5 buyers switched from Android. This year, that number grew to 20%.

This number shows us that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) sold a lot more new iPhones this year than they did at last year’s launch. Interestingly enough, the number of users switching from BlackBerry and features phones has decreased, but that can be attributed to the decreased number of feature phone and BlackBerry users.

CIRP co-founder and partner Mike Levin explained in the press release, “Perhaps because of the declining base of non-smartphone owners, a smaller percentage of iPhone buyers upgraded from a basic or flip phone, compared to the year-ago launch.”

Not surprisingly, most of the iPhone buyers were already iPhone users. That number jumped from 2012 at 55% to 65% in 2013. According to Levin, this increase is a fair comparison of the buyers between the two 30-day launch periods of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C.

Android users switch to Apple

The study goes into detail how Android users are making the switch to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) is one of the major vendors for Android-based phones. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has seen more switch-overs from Samsung (about 20%) than Samsung has seen from Apple Inc. (7%).

What’s more is that one-third of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s new customers previously owned Samsung devices. That’s comparable to the 11% of Samsung customers who previously owned Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) phones.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also a brand that’s popular with millennials. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) is more popular with middle-aged and older consumers. It’s also more popular with lower-income customers.
