The tragic infanticide was called in by Jillian McCabe herself, who told a 911 dispatcher, “I just threw my son over the Yaquina Bay bridge,” according an affidavit obtained by KGW. She later told authorities that voices in her head were telling her to throw her son to his death.

London McCabe fell 133 feet into freezing waters, in which the Coast Guard, Newport police and fire and the Lincoln County sheriff’s office searched for a body, which was located around 10.30 p.m. to the east of the bridge. His mother is currently being held, accused of aggravated murder, murder, first degree manslaughter, and second degree manslaughter.

Mom mounting health issues in the family

According to family members, Jillian had struggled with mental health issues in the past. Her son was born with severe autism, and she had recently separated from husband Matt McCabe, who himself had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The family had applied for help from public and private organizations, but a lack of response led to an internet campaign for donations. McCabe recently created an online donation site for her family, which raised almost $7,000 towards a target of $50,000 before fundraising ended 8 months ago.

“I love my husband and he has taken care of myself and my son for years and years and now it’s time for me to take the helm,” she posted. “I am scared and I am reaching out. I hope I am not coming across trashy or over-reactionary. I must explore every avenue to take care of my family right now.”

The lack of support may have taken its toll on her mental health, and ultimately led to the tragic death of her child. Counseling was provided for law enforcement involved in the search for the body.

“It’s one of these things you don’t want to happen in your community,” said Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda. “I feel really sorry for the family. Losing a kid isn’t easy.”

My condolences go out to the family, and I sincerely hope that Jillian McCabe receives the help that she needs.
