Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is set to end its five-month search by naming its enterprise and cloud chief, Satya Nadella as Chief Executive Officer

According to a report filed by Dina Bass, Peter Burrows and Jonathan Erlichman of Bloomberg, one of Microsoft’s lead independent directors could succeed Bill Gates as chairman.

Satya Nadella boosted revenue

Satya Nadella, an enterprise-technology veteran, joined Microsoft in 1992. He has had leadership roles in cloud services, server software, Internet search and business applications. Under his stewardship as president of Microsoft’s server business, the revenue galloped to $20.3 billion in the fiscal year through June, up from $16.6 billion he took over in 2011.When Ballmer overhauled Microsoft’s structure in July to focus the company on devices and services, the unit got renamed cloud and enterprise.

As reported yesterday, Microsoft Corporation was expected to name its next CEO within the next week or so. The company’s insiders appeared to have the edge over other candidates with Satya Nadella likely being the top pick. It was reasoned Satya Nadella could be a frontrunner for the top spot at Microsoft Corporation as he is not only exceptionally familiar with the company due to his spending a large chunk of his career there, but also due to his solid technical background and holding various positions at Microsoft.

Assiduous search

Microsoft’s CEO position retains an incredible prominence in the world of computing. Arguably Microsoft has been left a little behind by the incredible power of Google Inc and Apple Inc., but they still form part of the big three companies in the world of computing. This is a critical time for the world’s 41st biggest corporation – according to Forbes – with Windows 8 having bombed, the Xbox One well behind the PS4 in sales terms, the PC market diversifying rapidly and cloud computing set to become an incredibly important technology in the near future.

Thus, one can understand Microsoft making a very assiduous search for the right person, though the process stretching several months could also be considered rather interminable.

New chairman at Microsoft?

Microsoft’s board is also considering replacing Bill Gates as chairman of the company, ousting the company’s co-founder and possibly replacing him with John Thompson, Microsoft’s lead independent director. In the event of Gates leaving, it would remove two of Microsoft’s iconic employees from the software giant.
