Kickstarter is one of the most popular websites for crowd-funding special projects. Many of these projects range from interesting to unique to downright bizarre. One recent particular project manages to straddle the latter two.

Lunar Mission One

Lunar Mission One popped up earlier this week and hopes to achieve a super ambitious goal to send an unmanned drilling module to the moon’s south pole. This module will attempt to drill down to a 20 meters, which is about 10 times deeper than an previous mission.

Lunar Mission One: The goal’s ultimate mission

The goal of this mission is to access lunar rock dating back 4.5 billion years ago to discover the geological composition of the moon, effects of asteroid bombardment, and the ancient relationship it shares with Earth. The ultimate goal of this particular project is to learn more about the moon and to develop a deeper scientific understanding the the solar system.

As a way to entice project funding, Lunar Mission One will place whatever the donator wants into a time capsule as long as its within certain limits. This time capsule is made of two parts. The first part is a public archive that will consist of publicly assembled record of life on this planet. Complete with a history of humankind and species database which stores information on Earth’s known biodiversity and how it collaborates.

Donators take part of history

The second part of the project is exclusive to Kickstarter supporters. Those who fund at least £60 or more will get a Digital Memory Box which will launch with the mission ten years from now. According to the Kickstarter page, “You will be able to upload whatever digital information you want: a personal message, a photo, a family tree, a poem, a video, your favorite song … the choice is yours!”

Those who want to send a stand of their own hair to the mission have the option of doing so.
