With a Galaxy S9 release anticipated in the near future, many companies are scrambling to offer something different that can compete with Samsung’s incredibly popular flagship series. Media reports suggest that we could see a competitor from rival company LG as soon as January. The LG G7 launch, if the dates are accurate, would buck the trend of the G-series smartphones releasing in March or April. This earlier release date suggests that LG is aware of the stiff competition, and desires to have a fresh phone on the market before Samsung gets their device in the hands of consumers.

LG G7 Launch

It’s anticipated that the LG G7 will be revealed at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas. The current G-series phone, the G6, has failed to see much success in 2017 compared to competitors like the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8. LG isn’t as big of a name in the smartphone scene as giants like Apple and Samsung are, and the company has also faced fierce competition from relative newcomer OnePlus.

Overall, the company has not made a significant impression on Android users. Sales were lower than expected, and it’s clear that there is a lot riding on the LG G7 after the shortcomings of its predecessor.

A launch before the Galaxy S9 could capture the attention of a market looking for the newest phone — right now. However, LG really has to deliver something special if they hope to finally gain a foothold in the luxury smartphone arena.

LG G7 Specs

We don’t currently know very much about what the LG G7 will feature, but there are a few speculations that suggest some pretty big improvements over the G6. It’s possible we’ll see an edge-to-edge OLED display, a dual-lens camera, and a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. We can also anticipate a pretty radical departure from the design of the G6, perhaps in an effort to distance the new flagship from a tepidly performing earlier model.

The Snapdragon 845 is the latest and greatest from Qualcomm, and rumors suggest that LG has actually wiped out the stock of the first run of chips. It’s possible that competing phones won’t even have access to these new processors, due to LG’s massive order.

The release date of the LG G7 has yet to be confirmed, so it’s possible that the phone won’t launch in January after all. Reliable speculation seem to suggest this earlier launch, however. We’ll just have to wait and see.
