LG G6 May Not Land In The U.S. Until April 7 [REPORT]

Updated on

The LG G6, which is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress later this month, may not come to the U.S. until about a month after it lands in South Korea. The news comes after we heard that the phone will be available on March 10, although that does line up with the newly reported South Korea launch date.

LG G6 expected in Korea next month

VentureBeat reviewed planning material for the G6 and reports that the smartphone will start landing in the hands of consumers on March 9. However, the phone won’t make it to the U.S. until mobile carriers start selling it on April 7.

LG has kept most of the details about the G6 under wraps, although that hasn’t kept a leak or two from spilling out here or there. The phone is expected to be revealed on Feb. 26, the day before the Mobile World Congress kicks off in Spain. The phone is expected to be made of glass and metal or have an all-metal design and feature an IP68 waterproof rating. The LG G6 is also likely to mark a divergence from the G5’s modular design, which was hugely unpopular with consumers.

LG G6 to face off with Samsung’s Galaxy S8

We’ve also heard that the G6’s display will have a non-standard aspect ratio of around 18:9 so that a greater portion of its face will be dedicated to the display, just like Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is expected to have. The LG G6 is also expected to have a flat 5.7-inch, although Samsung is believed to be offering curved 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch variants of the S8.

LG is trailing behind Samsung in its effort to steal some of the company’s market share, particularly as the G6 is expected to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, compared to the Galaxy S8’s next-generation Snapdragon 835. Samsung was rumored to have secured all of Qualcomm’s production capacity for the Snapdragon 835 chip, probably to keep them out of the hands of LG. But this doesn’t mean that LG is just giving up.

Samsung is not expected to reveal the Galaxy S8 at its Mobile World Congress event this year, most likely because it wants to ensure that the phone doesn’t have the exploding battery the Note 7 had. LG is seizing the opportunity, however, by showing off the G6 before Samsung can reveal its S8. Also the S8 isn’t expected to go on sale until April 21, so the LG G6 really needs to be available before then if the company is going to have any chance at stealing Samsung’s customers. The company also took a jab at Samsung’s Note 7 problems by outlining the design it’s using to prevent such battery problems.
