iPhone XS vs iPhone XS Max vs iPhone XR: Similarities And Differences

Updated on

Fresh details about the new iPhones continue to emerge just hours before Apple’s Gather Round event in Cupertino. The tech giant itself has been behind one of the biggest leaks about the 2018 iPhones. The rumor mill is certain that Apple will unveil a 5.8-inch iPhone Xs, a 6.5-inch iPhone Xs Max, and a 6.1-inch iPhone Xr at the event. Let’s dive into a detailed iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr comparison to see how the three models would differ. Of course, we will also look at the similarities. Remember that the comparison is based on a variety of leaks and rumors, not the official confirmation.

iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone Xr names leaked by Apple

Though Apple is often quite secretive about its upcoming products, it has accidentally leaked the names of all three new iPhones. Folks at All Things How discovered that the product sitemap XML file on Apple.com contained product names that will be used in Apple’s online store. The company has since taken down the list. The names, as expected, are: iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Design and display

The iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max would feature OLED screens measuring 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch diagonally. In contrast, the iPhone Xr would sport a 6.1-inch LCD panel, which is inferior and cheaper than its OLED counterparts. All the three phones will have a bezel-less design like iPhone X with a display notch. The notch will house the ear speaker, front camera, and the TrueDepth camera system that enables Face ID and Animoji.

The back panel of all three models would be made out of glass to facilitate wireless charging. Leaks and rumors so far hinted that the button placement on new iPhones will be the same as last year’s iPhone X. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max would sport dual cameras on the back while the iPhone Xr would feature only a single lens.

On the OLED models, the front and rear glass panels will be supported by a stainless steel frame. But the LCD iPhone Xr would ship with an aluminum frame. All the three models will lack the 3.5mm headphone jack, but they will have a Lightning port at the bottom.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Color options

The product sitemap XML file on Apple’s website didn’t just reveal the product names. It also mentioned the color options for the new iPhones. We were already expecting the iPhone Xr to come in vibrant colors like iPhone 5c. The XML file has just confirmed it. According to All Things How, the iPhone Xs an Xs Max will be available in Gold, Silver, and Space  Gray colors. On the other hand,  the LCD iPhone Xr would come in White, Black, Coral, Red, Yellow, and Blue colors.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Camera

On the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, the rear camera setup would consist of a 12MP main lens and a 12MP telephoto lens, both of which will support optical image stabilization. The handsets will get a 7MP camera on the front. The rear camera will allow users to take pictures in portrait mode. The Cupertino company is expected to use an improved image sensor in the OLED iPhones, following the trend where the ‘S’ iPhones got an improved camera compared to their predecessor.

The iPhone Xr would feature a single 12MP camera on the back with OIS, and a 7MP lens on the front for selfies. We expect its camera to be slightly better than the iPhone 8, which also had a single camera on the back.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Hardware specs

According to the leaked XML file, the iPhone Xs and Xs Max will be available in 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. There will be no microSD card slot for external memory. Leaks suggest both the OLED models will have 4GB RAM. In contrast, the iPhone Xr would come with only 3GB RAM, and 64GB and 256GB internal storage. There will be no 512GB option for the iPhone Xr.

All the three devices will have NFC, wireless charging, and an IP67 rating for water-resistance. The iPhone Xs is said to have a 2,716mAh battery. The Xs Max should pack a bigger battery to power its larger screen all day. Little is known about the iPhone Xr’s battery capacity.

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max will almost certainly run the A12 processor. Taiwan-based TMSC is manufacturing the A12 chips using its 7nm manufacturing process, which would lead to better energy efficiency and performance than the A11 processor. Recent reports suggest the iPhone Xr could feature last year’s A11 Bionic chipset to differentiate it from the more expensive iPhones. The A11 may be a year old but it’s still among the most powerful smartphone processors. In fact, it is faster than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 and Samsung’s Exynos 9810 chips.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Software

On the software front, all the three iPhones will run the iOS 12 out of the box. The software has undergone a three months long beta testing, and is now more than stable enough for general public use. Apple has optimized it to deliver better performance even on older devices.

The iOS 12 will also bring new features such as Memoji, Siri shortcuts, a revamped Stocks app, an improved Control Center, better notifications, and Screen Time. The Screen Time feature is aimed at curbing smartphone addiction. It will allow users to monitor and control the time they spend on your phones and within individual apps.

iPhone Xs vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone Xr: Price

Earlier this week, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said the 6.1-inch iPhone Xr would be priced anywhere between $699 and $849. Gurman added that the device would ship in limited quantities due to production issues. Above Avalon’s Neil Cybart claims the iPhone Xs Max would be priced at $1,099 for the base model, making it the most expensive iPhone ever. The iPhone Xs could sell for $949 compared to $999 for the iPhone X. Anyway, we will find out the official prices in just a few hours.
