iPhone 6C With FinFET Processor Set For Q2, 2016 Launch

Updated on

Apple’s low-cost iPhone 6C is back in the rumor mill. New reports coming out of Taiwan claim that the Cupertino-based tech giant would launch the device in the second quarter of 2016. Citing inside sources, DigiTimes says the iPhone 6C would use processors made by Samsung and TSMC.

iPhone 6C to be power-efficient

Earlier, there were rumors that Apple would launch the 4-inch iPhone 6C alongside the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in September. But KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the 4-inch iPhone won’t arrive until 2016. Apple wouldn’t want to cannibalize the sales of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus that would get a price cut when the new versions arrive in September.

Sources told DigiTimes that the iPhone 6C would use 14nm chips made by Samsung and 16nm chips from TSMC. The A9 chip that is expected to power the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will use the same production technologies. The publication adds that Apple was initially planning to equip the iPhone 6C with 20nm chips from TSMC. But it later turned to FinFET processors to take advantage of the increased performance and power efficiency.

AU Optronics may supply iPhone 6C display panel

Last week, Cowen & Co analyst Timothy Arcuri said Apple might have nixed the iPhone 6C plans as evidence of the 4-inch device have disappeared from the supply chain. But his claim contradicts another report that AU Optronics has won a contract to supply 4-inch display panels for a yet-to-be-announced iPhone that will arrive in 2016. Jefferies analysts have also reported that Apple would launch the iPhone 6C in 2016.

Last week, the ever so reliable NoWhereElse.fr leaked images of a battery that resembles the iPhone battery and comes from Apple’s usual supplier. However, the battery had the capacity of 1715mAh, lower than the iPhone 6’s 1810mAh. It fueled speculations that the battery might be for the 4-inch iPhone 6C. The battery has a manufacturing date of March 2015, when the iPhone 6C rumors were in full swing.
