Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus seem to be smashing all the sales records. The company said over the weekend that it received more than four million pre-orders for the new smartphones in just 24 hours. It’s the first time Apple has come up with smartphones bigger than 4-inch. Of course, Cupertino is a late entrant in the phablet category, which was so far dominated by Samsung.
iPhone 6 Plus an imitation of Galaxy Note
The Korean company is leaving no stone unturned to take a potshot at the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. In less than a day of Apple’s September 9 event, Samsung came up with the “It doesn’t take a genius” ad campaign. Each of those ads was targeted at the iPhone 6 or Apple Watch. And now the Korean electronics giant has released a short one-minute ad on its YouTube channel, attacking the new iPhone 6 Plus.
Samsung’s new ad cites several Twitter messages and online publications, reminding consumers of the harsh criticism it faced about four years ago when it launched the first Galaxy Note. It points out that the iPhone 6 Plus comes years after the Galaxy Note line introduced the “phablet” form factor. The message of the ad is clear: Apple is no longer dismissing the phablet category. Instead it is imitating the Note line.
Apple could have launched a big screen iPhone years ago
Ever since Samsung entered the smartphone market, it has launched phones in over a dozen screen sizes. Many of them were flops. The form factors that fortunately gained popularity became Samsung’s trump cards. In a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company could have launched big-screen iPhones years ago.
But the Cupertino company held off until all the pieces were in place to create a high quality phone. Cook said it wasn’t just about making bigger phones. It was about making a better smartphone in every single way.
Apple shares rose 0.29% to $101.95 at 12:23 PM EDT on Monday.
