iOS 9 Release Date Set For September 16

Updated on

Apple announced the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, the new iPad Pro, a fully revamped Apple TV, and an updated iPad Mini on Wednesday. During the keynote, the tech giant also revealed the availability of its mobile operating system. The iOS 9 will be available for download and install from Wednesday, Sept.16 across the globe. The new OS was first announced in June at WWDC.

iOS 9 to require only 1.8GB of storage space

Of course, the iOS 9 will come pre-installed on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus right out of the box when the new phones go for sale on Sept.25. The free iOS 9 update will be available to the iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and later, iPod touch 5th generation and later, and iPhone 4S and later. Apple didn’t specify at what time the new OS will be released, but the company has historically offered software upgrades at 1:00 PM ET.

The iOS 9 upgrade is expected to be much easier than last year’s iOS 8. The new mobile OS requires only 1.8GB of free space to install, compared to more than 4GB required by iOS 8. The Install Later feature will perform upgrades when your device is not in use. However, Apple said that some of the features in iOS 9 may not be available in all languages and regions.

Watch OS 2 to arrive alongside iOS 9

The iOS 9 makes mobile devices more intelligent and proactive with improved Siri and powerful search. The OS learns from your habits to suggest you apps, actions, and other bits of information. It will also increase the overall experience of iPad users, thanks to multi-tasking features that let you interact with two apps simultaneously.

With iOS 9, Apple Pay has also received new capabilities such as merchant reward programs, support for transit in Maps, and support to Discover. Shoppers will be able to manage their cards in the new Wallet app. The iOS 9 boasts of battery optimization that would give an additional hour of battery life to your mobile device. And the new low-power mode will further expand the battery life by up to three hours.

Apple said the Watch OS 2 will also arrive along with iOS 9 on Sept.16, while OS X El Capitan is due out Sept.30.
