One thing’s for sure, the release of Apple’s new iOS 9 has not been a smooth ride for users. First there were issues in downloading the update, and then there were bugs like the Slide to Upgrade and others. Now Apple iPhone users are reporting something new; they are seeing increased mobile data usage after updating to iOS 9.
It turns out the culprit in using up all your data is a new option called WiFi Assist in Apple’s new iOS 9 that recognizes a slow WiFi connection, and in such a case, it automatically switches to either a 3G or 4G data connection. While this option is very useful and a smart way to ensure that your internet experience doesn’t suffer, it definitely has a downside as well. The net result, of course, is that your data usage will increase whenever your WiFi signal is poor.
There is, however, a quick and easy solution to this problem if you too are finding that you are seeing too much increased data usage after upgrading to iOS 9.
Fix increased data usage in iOS 9
Step 1: Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and then tap on Mobile Data/Cellular.
Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom and disable Wi-Fi Assist.
That’s all you need to do. Now your iPhone will no longer switch to 3G or 4G data network even when the WiFi reception is weak.
This setting is enabled by default, and if like others, you too find that your phone is somehow using up more data than it used to, then just disable this setting which will prevent it from using the data network when WiFi signal is low.
Note that switching this feature off doesn’t prevent you from manually switching back to a 3G or 4G data network; you can still do that anytime you want.
