Sure Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) introduced a new app this week that saw considerable changes to its design and navigation. However, the big news was Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s wholesale redesign with the release of iOS 7. As you might expect, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) also dominated new media mentions with 5 million users of “iOS7” among social-media users, according to social media agency We Are Social. And that was just Wednesday, September 18th. In contrast, iOS saw only 749,505 mentions during its launch day last year.

iOS 7 users’ anticipation of jailbreak

For those who simply downloaded iOS 7 in anticipation of a new jailbreak, this news will probably fall on deaf ears. For Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) investors it shows that the Cupertino, CA company is still quite relevant.

These numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. While growth in social media expands each year, you can’t take away from the fact that Wednesday saw Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) triumph with its omnipresence amongst the tech savvy.

Let’s face it, just as the Internet gave people bushels of free porn and a voice to critique movies, social media brings out the complainers in droves. The biggest complaint around iOS 7 seems to be the time it took a number of people to download it. This sparked a spate of complaints that generally read something like, “iOS 8 will be released before my download finishes,” something that was re-tweeted over 10,000 times on Wednesday and Thursday.

Apple iOS 7 problems

“The iOS 7 release was, for the most part, successful, but was hampered with complaints about updating problems on social media, which could have been handled more proactively and effectively by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL),” We Are Social senior analyst Ed Kitchingman said in a statement. “However, people were impressed with iOS 7 when they did get it installed, and users felt as if it really did offer something new and worthwhile. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) should be satisfied with the consumer reaction, but should arguably consider a more proactive approach to handing real-time customer complaints on social media in the future.”

Five million mentions is a bit of a misnomer, as the number is presumably considerably higher. The data released by We Are Social was based on its study of English language mentions.
