iOS 11 Public Beta 1: How To Install It On iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch

Updated on

Just yesterday, Apple quelled the thirst of the impatient among us by releasing the long-awaited iOS 11 Public Beta 1. So there’s no longer any reason to pay the $99 developer account fee or resort to riskier methods of getting iOS 11. It means that those who are looking to give it a try can do so right now by downloading this public version from Apple’s website. In this article, we are going to guide you through the process.

iOS 11 Public Beta 1

Before you jump straight into the tutorial below, there are a few things you must know beforehand. Apple just introduced the second beta of iOS 11 last week. However, you should be aware that while iOS 11 Public Beta 1 offers greater stability, tweaks, refinements and a focus on the iPad, it is still a beta. As a result, it does not represent anything close to what the final public version of the firmware will be.

Additionally, it is likely to have some performance issues affecting battery performance, system stability and more. Such issues should be expected with a beta, and as such, you should install it on a secondary device and not your main device. You should also check to make sure that the device is compatible with iOS 11.

iOS 11 Public Beta 1 compatibility

With this latest firmware, Apple has finally phased out its support for older 32-bit devices, meaning that anything older than the iPhone 5s isn’t supported. We have put together a list of all the iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices that are compatible. Unfortunately, if your iOS device is not on this list, it means it can not support the OS.

  • iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 6, 6 Plus, iPhone SE, 5s
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (first and second gen), 10.5-inch Pro, 9.7-inch Pro, Air 2, Air, iPad (2017)
  • iPad mini 4, mini 3, mini 2
  • Sixth-generation iPod Touch

Other requirements

Before you begin to install iOS 11 Public Beta 1, please make sure it is running the latest version of the OS. Right now, that is iOS 10.3.2; you can get it here.

Additionally, you need to be registered with Apple to take advantage of this public beta. To do that, go to and sign up. Lastly, we recommend that you back up all of the data on your chosen device. You can use either iCloud or iTunes to do so.
