Intel, Tencent, Haier Unveil Windows-Based Gaming Console

Updated on

Intel, Tencent and Haier have announced a new gaming console called the Tencent TGP BOX. Riot Games will manufacture this console and release it as the Blade BOX, says Gamespot (via AllChinaTech). The news of a new game console which promises to change traditional gaming follows the rumors of the soon-to-be launched upgraded PlayStation 4.

Intel helps to make console smarter

All that is known for now is that the console will run on Windows 10, and the overlay used will be the Tencent Games Platform. Sixth generation Intel processors, namely, i3, i5 and i7 chips, will power the console.

The design is very different from the type of console designs we are accustomed to. The console will feature more curved edges and a different front layout to the back. The controller bears a strong resemblance to the Xbox One controller. The console bears different features than what we would expect, however.

The console comes with smart built-in features based on Intel’s smart sensing and smart home technology. The console will let users perform functions such as downloading or streaming games, live-streaming gaming sessions, playing local games, etc.

It will reportedly come with a TGP Box mode. Users will be able to switch between the gaming mode and Windows 10 with the help of the TGP Box mode, and this will make it possible for them to run the two asynchronously.

China a key market

In the Asian and international markets, Tencent is a major game developer and operator’ therefore, it can be said that the console will be able to run games such as FIFA Online 3, NBA 2K Online, Monster Hunter Online, League of Legends and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Tournament. It is expected that third-party publishers and developers will release more games later this year.

ZhugeEX, a video game industry analyst, told Gamespot that the new console is “basically a Windows 10-powered gaming console but with smart features designed to transcend traditional gaming.”

Tencent is best known for its internet services, including social networks, chat apps and e-commerce sites, but it also owns Riot Games and Epic Games. Tencent is a major player in the Asian market, but the region is mostly untapped in terms of gaming. Whether the console will arrive in Western markets or not is not known as of now.

In Asia, China will be a key market as it lifted the ban on console gaming and reduced restrictions last year.
