Intel Corporation And AARP Unveil Tablets For 50+ Year Users

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) collaborated with AARP to offer simple to use tablets dubbed as RealPad that is made to cater the needs of users over 50 years of age, who are not keen to adopt the latest technology. The tablet, having large icons, focuses on simplicity with quick and easy access to email, Web sites, social networks, multimedia and e-books.

“Now there’s no excuse for not having a tablet. RealPad makes it easy to connect, share and learn,” the RealPad website claims. This tablet has a screen size of 7.8-inch and will runs on Android platform. Intel powered tablet comes with a price tag of $189, and will be sold through Walmart’s website.

The tablet runs on Intel Corporation’s older dual-core Z2520 processor and weighs 396 grams, substantially heavier than 331 gram iPad mini. The tab sports 2 megapixel front camera and 5 megapixel rear camera. Other specifications include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 16GB storage and micro SD slot for expandable storage.

Customized specs

Intel along with AARP has decided to design a user interface with large icons for once-click access to email, social networks, weather, news, games, entertainment, camera and pictures, and Google’s search engine. On the bottom of the screen, there is an icon for AARP, the web, apps and tablet fixing tools. Users can get connected to the tech support agents over the internet, offering remedial solutions and solve problems. Real tablet includes icons to access Google Play and advanced tools.

Intel is looking forward to expanding its tablet market by offering devices that target specific groups of users such as students. Additionally, the company is also researching telemedicine technologies to monitor the patient remotely. As of now, the tablet, which is being manufactured by a third-party for Intel, is available for sale in U.S. only.

In a separate development, Intel Atom tablets powered by Android got FBReader, which is a customizable app that is compatible with numerous e-Book file formats such as ePub 2/3, rtf, doc (MS Word), html, fb2(.zip), mobi (including non-protected kindle books), and plain text. Also, it allows the users to external TrueType/OpenType fonts and custom backgrounds. Users can adjust the screen brightness according to their preference as FBReader can have adjustable color screens according to day and night.
