Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) signed a strategic partnership agreement and invested $50 million in Hortonworks to address the big data needs of enterprise customers.

Details of partnership agreement

According to Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ), its partnership with Hostonworks will help accelerate the adoption of Enterprise Apache Hadoop. The PC maker said it would deeply integrate the Hortonworks Data Platform with HP HAVEn big data platform.

Under the partnership agreement, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) and Hortonworks made a commitment to integrate their engineering strategies.

The companies also agreed to deepen their existing go-to-market collaboration to enable the customers of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) deploy the Hortonworks Data Platform as the Hadoop component of HP HAVEn.

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) also intends to certify HP Vertica with Apache Hadoop YARN, the architectural core of Hadoop 2.0.

In a statement, Colin Mahony, general manager of HP Vertica said, “The ability to understand data and put it to effective use is now more crucial than ever. Hortonworks has demonstrated outstanding dedication and expertise in addressing the business and technology needs of its customers within this new era of information and data, and we look forward to partnering with the Hortonworks team to deliver innovative big data solutions to our customers.”

On the other hand, Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks said, “Through deep integration with Enterprise Apache Hadoop, HP customers will be able to easily build their next generation of applications with the Hortonworks Data Platform.”

Hewlett-Packard’s Martin Fink joins Hortonworks board

Martin Fink, the executive vice president and chief technology officer of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) will join the board of directors of Hortonworks.

According to Fink, the partnership of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) with Hortonworks demonstrates its commitment to open source technology for enterprise.

He expressed excitement regarding the opportunity to partner with the leadership team of Hortonworks to help them deliver flexible, tailored and open solutions to customers.

Fink leads the research team at HP Labs, the exploratory and advanced research group of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) responsible in anticipating trends in the IT industry to address potential issues that would confront customers over the next decade.

He is also leading the execution of the cloud strategy of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ), and supervised its overall open source and Linux strategy during his almost three-decade career in the company.
