Just a few hours after the June 2018 Android security update came out, users of the Google Pixel 2 XL started experiencing a rather strange issue that they immediately started reporting. Apparently, Google is aware of the Google Pixel 2 XL screen wake-up bug and is going to fix it as soon as possible.
Google Pixel 2 XL screen wake-up bug frustrates users
The reports of the Google Pixel 2 XL screen wake-up bug started flooding the different forums such as Reddit. Frustrated users complained about when they are unlocking the screen through the fingerprint scanner or the power button, it takes about two to three seconds to activate. The problem is seen when AOD is disabled, although it is present with AOD enabled.
It’s worth mentioning that there is a separate bug report submitted on the company’s website by unsatisfied users. One user also added that the problem likely came due to one code commit.
However, there were even comments that Google made this lag intentionally as a Twitter user Nathan Chancellor pointed out in one tweet, saying that it’s not a “bug” or a “side effect.”

Nevertheless, after some time, Google finally answered the affected users and acknowledged the issue. Google employee Ernest, who is the Community Manager on the Pixel User Community, wrote a detailed message, confirming that the Pixel 2 XL screen wake-up bug is going to get its own fix that will roll out in the following weeks. It’s safe to assume that the fix will be available through the next security update.
“We are aware that some Pixel 2 XL users are experiencing occasional delays with wake ups. We have now identified a fix which will be rolling out in the coming weeks,” Ernest wrote. “In the meantime, the problem can be worked around by setting the Ambient Display to “always on” on your Pixel 2 XL.”
As soon as Google releases a fix, we will update our readers so they don’t have to struggle with the screen unlocking lag.
