The much-awaited Google Pixel 2 unveiling is just a few hours away. The Google Pixel 2 event live stream will begin at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Oct.4. That’s 12 noon Eastern Time, 5 p.m. UK time, and 3 a.m. AEDT on Thursday if you live in Australia. The October 4 show will be one of the most exciting Google events in recent years. The company has rolled up its sleeves for a major push in the hardware business. The original Pixel phones received an all around praise, but they have sold less than three million units since launch. Here’s what we expect Google to show off at the event.
Google’s response to the iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8
The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be the biggest highlights of the event. The regular Pixel 2 will have a 5-inch display, and it would look similar to the last year’s model. The larger Pixel 2 XL would sport a new bezel-less design that would be similar to the LG G6 and LG V30. Both the handsets would ditch the 3.5mm audio jack, and offer dual stereo speakers. Both the devices would have a metal and glass design similar to the original Pixel phones.
The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will get a new feature called Active Edge that would allow users to activate Google Assistant by squeezing the phone. The new Pixel phones will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, which runs most of the flagship Android handsets released this year. They will undoubtedly run Android Oreo out of the box. Both the devices would offer an IP67 level water-resistance.
Under the hood, the phones will offer 4GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. The regular Pixel 2 would cost $649 for the 64GB version and $749 for the 128GB model. If you want the Pixel 2 XL, you will have to shell out $849 for the 64GB variant and $949 for the 128GB model. The Pixel 2 will go on sale on October 19th. However, the Pixel 2 XL won’t hit the store shelves until November 15.
What else to expect?
Google will also launch a new Home Mini priced at around $49 to compete with Amazon’s Echo Dot. The new smart speaker will not be as advanced as the regular Google Home, but it will give you access to the Google Assistant. The rumor mill also claims that there will be a Home Max, but not much is known about it. The search engine giant is also expected to refresh the Daydream View VR headset, and bump up its price tag from $79 to $99.
Another premium product that Google will show off at the event is a new PixelBook. It will be a 2-in-1 laptop with a metal body that you can also use as a tablet. With a starting price of around $1,200, the PixelBook is expected to compete against the MacBook Pro and Microsoft’s Surface Book. The laptop will come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of storage options. Since it’s a 2-in-1, it will support Google’s “Pixel Pen” stylus.
Google has also been working on a set of wireless headphones code-named “Bisto” that it could unveil at the Pixel 2 event. David Ruddock of Android Police described the Bisto as “Bluetooth earbuds” with an over-the-head wire between the buds. It means they will not be completely wireless like Apple’s AirPods. However, they are going to cost you $159, the same as AirPods. Bisto will give users access to Google Assistant, allowing you to perform several functions without pulling out your phone.
