Better, Faster 2nd Gen Google Chromecast To Launch Soon

Updated on

Google will soon launch the second-generation version of its Chromecast media-streaming device later in September, claims a report from 9to5 Google. The new Chromecast will have several upgrades over the current version, says the report, citing documents the authors obtained.

Plenty of new features

Google’s new device will come with Wi-Fi and a host of new features, including support for content feeds. “Fast Play” has also been added to make it quicker and simpler to connect Chromecast to other devices. The next-gen Chromecast could support the faster 802.11ac band versus 802.11b/g/n by the original Chromecast, says the report.

Google’s new Chromecast device has the same shape as its predecessor, but will be available in a variety of colors, the report says. The device will be launched in 10 countries, and will be priced similar to the first generation Chromecast. The new device will offer support for content feeds, but it is not clear for now what kind of “feeds’’ a user will be able to add. It can be assumed that they are referring to social media feeds or image feeds that the users can play when their Chromecast is in screensaver “backdrop” mode. The Chromecast backdrop is customizable allowing users to toggle things like weather, art and personal photographs as well.

To be launched at Google event

Chromecast Audio is another new addition, allowing the device to connect to speakers with the help of an auxiliary cord, according to the documents. Chromecast Audio, which boasts high-quality sound, will have multi-room support, and will also be able to mirror users Chrome or Android audio, says 9to5 Google. Spotify is expected to launch a mobile app supporting Chromecast.

No exact details are available on how the upgrades regarding support for content feeds, Fast Play, or the improved Wi-Fi will make the second-generation Chromecast better than the predecessor. According to the reports, the new Google Chromecast will be announced at an event on September 29, which means users will not have to wait long to find out the official specifications. At the same event, Google is expected to announce two new Nexus smartphones – one from LG and another from Huawei.
