Galaxy S8 To Be Powered By Exynos 8895 With Mali-G71 For VR

Updated on

Samsung is going through a rough patch due to the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco. But the Korean electronics giant remains focused on making its next-gen Galaxy S8 better than anything you’ll see on the market. A few days ago, a senior executive at Samsung LSI was arrested while trying to sell confidential information regarding Samsung’s 10nm and 14nm chip fabrication process to Chinese firms.

While the executive has been sued by Samsung, the confidential information from the papers has leaked. According to SamMobile, the documents reveal that Samsung plans to use 10nm Exynos processor in the next year’s Galaxy S8. The publication has also learned from its sources that the S8 would run Exynos 8895 chipset with ARM’s latest Mali-G71 GPU.

Why Mali-G71 is the right GPU for VR

ARM’s new graphics unit is said to be twice as powerful as Mali-T880, which sits inside the Galaxy S7. It is also said to be faster than the Adreno GPU in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 830. Tech companies are focusing on upgrading GPUs to enhance the virtual reality experience. The Galaxy S8 is said to sport a 4K UHD display to provide users a better VR experience.

Notably, the Mali-G71 uses ARM’s new Bifrost architecture, which is designed to support 4K and virtual reality. It will make the Galaxy S8 the right handset for VR applications. According to SamMobile, it also supports technologies like OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan, GPU Compute, and Android RenderScript. Samsung is yet to officially announced 4K OLED screens, though.

Is Galaxy S8 set for early release?

Last month, Samsung mobile chief indicated that the company could ditch the flat-screen altogether and launch the Galaxy S8 only with dual-edge screens. Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone is also rumored to feature a dual-camera system. However, it is too early to say whether the S8 dual-camera would be similar to the one in Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus. Samsung may release its next-gen flagship earlier than expected if the Galaxy Note 7 fails to recover from the battery fiasco.
