Galaxy S8 To Feature Beast Mode, Hints Samsung’s Trademark Filing

Updated on

Samsung’s next-gen flagship Galaxy S8 is rumored to pack exciting new features in an attempt to regain consumer confidence following the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. The handset was already expected to be a beast in terms of performance. But now a trademark filing by Samsung indicates that the Galaxy S8 might have a dedicated “Beast Mode.”

Samsung applies to trademark ‘Beast Mode’

The Korean electronics giant has filed with the European Union to trademark the name “Beast Mode.” The filing was first spotted by Dutch publication Galaxy Club. Samsung has not described in its trademark documentation what the Beast Mode is. Fortunately, the application details where it will be applied to. The Beast Mode will be used in relation to “Smartphones; Mobile phones; Application software for smart phones.”

Android users are getting used to a variety of modes that impact their smartphones’ performance. We are all familiar with the ‘battery saver mode.’ The Korean electronics giant recently pushed out Android Nougat beta builds to the Galaxy S7 that have Games and High-performance modes. The Beast Mode could be a sibling of the Games and High-performance modes in the Galaxy S8.

Why a Beast Mode makes sense

The US version of the Galaxy S8 is said to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, while the rest of the world would get an Exynos 8895-powered version. The device is expected to pack 8GB RAM for smooth multi-tasking. Samsung is also rumored to beef up the phone’s graphic capabilities to enhance the virtual reality experience.

It makes sense for Samsung to add Beast Mode to the S8. Leaving all the power-sucking capabilities turned on at all times will rapidly deplete the phone’s battery.  Most of the times the handset will be idle or work fine at less than 50% of its capacity. But there will be times when the Galaxy S8 will be required to deliver 100%. For instance, when multi-tasking, playing high-performance games, or using VR. The Boost Mode might be turned on automatically when the device senses a demand, or manually by the user for a limited time.

Galaxy S8 to be unveiled in April

Samsung has reportedly decided to delay the Galaxy S8 unveiling until April. Sources who attended Samsung’s strategy meeting at its headquarters told Naver.com that the S8 would be unveiled at a special event in New York in April. Samsung has traditionally unveiled its Galaxy S line devices at the Mobile World Congress. The roughly eight-week delay would give Samsung enough time to ensure that the Galaxy S8 doesn’t explode like the Note 7.

The Galaxy S8 is expected to ditch the physical home button and headphone jack. The fingerprint sensor and home functionality will be embedded in the AMOLED display itself. The headphone jack will be replaced by a USB Type-C port. Other rumored features include Viv AI assistant, fast-charging technology, and an iris scanner.
