But consumers and the rumor mill seem to be more excited about the 10th-anniversary Galaxy S device that would debut early next year. The Korean company is expected to give it a radical overhaul to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its flagship model, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone X.
Finally! The in-display fingerprint sensor
Fresh Galaxy S10 rumors suggest that the phone will live up to the hype. Unlike Galaxy S9, the next year’s model will not be a modest evolution of its predecessor. Korean site The Bell has learned from inside sources that Samsung would incorporate an in-display fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy S10. This report shouldn’t come as a surprise because the company has been working on the optical fingerprint technology for years.
The Galaxy S10’s fingerprint sensor will be similar to that of Oppo Find X. It will allow you to unlock the handset by placing your finger on the screen. Past Galaxy S10 rumors have claimed that Samsung would use Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint technology under the OLED screen. There will be no fingerprint reader on the back of S10. The Korean company was targeting to integrate the optical fingerprint sensor into the Galaxy Note 9, but decided against it due to ‘technological difficulties.’
Galaxy S10 rumors hint at 3D facial recognition
Apple took the smartphone security game to a whole new level by introducing 3D facial recognition technology Face ID with the iPhone X. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus have an Intelligent Scan feature that combines data from 2D facial recognition and the iris scanner, but it is far less secure than Face ID.
The Bell reports that Samsung is investing tons of resources to add 3D facial recognition to its next year’s Galaxy S flagship. It will help the Galaxy phones compete better with the next-gen iPhones. Samsung has teamed up with Israel-based Mantis Vision to integrate 3D depth-sensing algorithm and sensors with the S10’s camera module.
Sources told The Bell that Samsung has asked its suppliers not to make iris scanners for the next year’s model, meaning you won’t find the iris scanner on the Galaxy S10. The Korean company tends to offer more than one way to unlock its flagship devices. So, we wouldn’t be surprised to see both the in-display fingerprint scanner and 3D facial recognition on the Galaxy S10.
There will be three Galaxy S10 models
Korean site ETNews reports that Samsung is preparing to launch three models of the Galaxy S10. Two of them will have a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display while the third one will get a larger 6.2-inch display. The three models are code-named ‘Beyond 0’, ‘Beyond 1’, and ‘Beyond 2.’
All of them will reportedly run the same processor. So, how is Samsung going to differentiate between the three models? One way to differentiate them could be the amount of RAM – maybe 4GB for the cheapest model, 6GB for the middle one, and 8GB for the most expensive one. Another way could be to keep the most innovative features such as 3D facial recognition and in-display fingerprint reader exclusive to the most expensive model.
But there is going to be more. Sources told ETNews that ‘Beyond 0’ will have only a single camera lens on the back while ‘Beyond 1’ will get a dual camera setup. The larger 6.2-inch model will be Samsung’s first flagship with a triple rear camera system.
Galaxy S10 Plus to have a triple camera system
Huawei’s P20 Pro with its triple camera system has knocked the iPhone X, Google Pixel 2, and Galaxy S9 Plus out of the park. According to DxOMark, the P20 Pro is by far the best smartphone camera available on the market. The Galaxy S9 Plus, iPhone X, and Pixel 2 don’t even come close to it in camera performance. Samsung has to catch up with the P20 Pro and its successor.
It is unclear how the third rear camera on the Galaxy S10 would function. It could be used for better optical zoom and augmented reality. KB Securities analyst Kim Dong-won also recently told investors that at least one variant of Galaxy S10 would feature a triple rear camera system.
Galaxy S10 rumors claim a sound-emitting display is on the cards
How would you like your phone if it had no ear speaker? The rumor mill claims the Galaxy S10 would feature a ‘sound-emitting’ display. Sources told ETNews that Samsung was looking to eliminate the earpiece by incorporating the ‘sound-emitting’ display technology in an attempt to expand the screen space. Customers will be able to hear the other person when on a phone call by pressing the top half of the display against their ear.
According to SamMobile, the new display will use bone conduction and vibration to transmit sound. The S10’s display will still not be fully bezel-less because the front camera and other sensors will still be there. According to Twitter tipster Ice Universe, the S10 will have a screen-to-body ratio of 94%, much higher than the Galaxy S9’s 83.6%.
Among other things, we can expect the Galaxy S10 to run the next-gen Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820 chips depending on the market. The phone should retain the microSD card slot and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S10 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January next year. The Korean company usually unveils new Galaxy S handsets around the MWC in late February or early March, but it is reportedly keeping the 2019 MWC event for its foldable smartphone.
