Mark Fields, the chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) emphasized that the automaker intends to produce electric vehicles for the masses during an interview with Bianna Golodryga of Yahoo Finance.

Field reiterated that Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) has capability to produce electric cars. He pointed out that the automaker has a full-line of electric vehicles that have done well in the market place.

Ford has tremendous capability to build electric cars

He pointed out that Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is currently ranked second in the electric car industry. Fields said, “We have tremendous capability in our organization.”

The Ford Focus was ranked as the most fuel-efficient compact car in the United States. It was the best-selling car worldwide last year. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is also selling two plug-in hybrid models—the Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi.

Fields added that the company will focus on providing the power of choice for consumers whether they want to buy an electric, gas or diesel powered vehicles and others.

Last month, Fields said producing an electric car is “consistent with the product philosophy” of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F). He said the automaker is capable of building a larger fully electric sedan to compete with the Model S of Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA).

Ford’s strategy will be different from Tesla

According to Fields, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) did a very good job of bringing electric cars to the consciousness of the American people. However, he pointed out that Tesla’s approach is focused on high-end consumers.

On the other hand, Fields said their strategy is to make electric vehicles affordable for the masses.

He also emphasized that Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is not interested in acquiring Tesla Motors Inc (NYSE:F). There had been speculations that Ford and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) are pursuing the electric car manufacturer.

Ford to integrate driver-assisted technologies over time

When asked about diver-assisted technology, Fields said the automaker intends to integrate driver-assisted technologies across its entire line-up over time.” He noted that automakers worldwide are still conducting a lot of research and sensor technologies are getting better.

“Our approach at Ford is to look at this as an opportunity for us going forward and that’s exactly how we’re going to look at it,” said Fields.
