Flying Car Now Officially Available For Pre-order At $399,000

Updated on

Netherlands-based PAL-V is now taking orders for the first commercial flying car in the world – the Liberty. To get your hands on that car, all you need is $400,000, which otherwise can get you a nice, sleek and perfectly new Rolls-Royce Dawn.

Pioneer Edition on sale first

PAL-V is accepting pre-orders for its Liberty car, which it calls “the first certified commercial flying car ever.” According to the Dutch company, the Liberty models are completely compliant with all the safety regulations set by global governing bodies. PAL-V added that Liberty deliveries will start by the end of 2018.

The three-wheeled vehicle has a retractable top-mounted rotor, making it look more like a motor trike with gyrocopter skills than just a car, according to TechCrunch. The first 90 models are designated as Pioneer Editions, boasting special interior and exterior details.

Buyers will have to pay $599,000 for the Pioneer Edition to get the additional standard features like power heating, an electronic flight instrument display instead of the old boring electromechanical option, at-home training, fancy detailing and the personalized touch. The Dutch company will begin selling the standard model, dubbed “the Liberty Sport,” for $399,000 after the Pioneer Edition sells out, notes Motor Trend.

You don’t have to pay all of the car’s price up front. The company is accepting a non-refundable deposit of $25,000 for the Pioneer edition and $10,000 for the base model. You can also put down a $2,500 escrow refundable deposit, which puts you on the waiting list, according to TechCrunch.

Both flying and driving license needed for flying car

Buyers should have a license for both flying and driving. The Liberty can lower its suspension on the road and use its tilting cockpit for better maneuverability. The top speed of the vehicle on the road — as listed by the Dutch company — is 100 mph. The flying car can travel up to 112 mph in the air, notes Motor Trend.

In a press release, the company said, “PAL-V deliberately chose to engineer, design and build a flying car with proven technologies and fully compliant with existing regulations. This leads to a first product delivery date that is realistic and imminent.”

The Dutch company expects North America to be a large market for its flying car. PAL-V may be the first car company to bring a flying vehicle to market, but it is not the only one in the game. Airbus is expected to have a prototype ready by the end of the year.
