Facebook: Oculus Quest To Launch in 2019

Updated on

Facebook announced that its new Oculus Quest, an all-in-one VR gaming system, will launch in spring 2019. The company claims the new headset will usher in the “next era of VR gaming;” it will sell for $399.

According to an announcement on Oculus’ website, the new headset offers “six degrees of freedom and Touch controllers.” Users who enjoy playing VR-supported games will have a much easier time immersing themselves in the virtual world. There will be over 50 games available on the Oculus Quest, including Robo Recall, The Climb and Moss.

The new headset was announced alongside the Oculus Insight, a new tech that “powers inside-out tracking, Guardian, and Touch controller tracking.” The new technology utilizes four ultra-wide-angle sensors and a computer vision algorithm that will help the system determine the user’s exact location in real time for more accurate and lively scenery.

The new tech will give users a “greater sense of immersion, presence and mobility,” meaning the virtual world and reality itself will merge more realistically and help players immerse themselves in it. The Guardian technology is being introduced to make users feel safer while in virtual reality by allowing users to set up the experience they want.

New controller

With the new controller, Oculus introduces a more natural touch and approach to virtual reality. The buttons are the same, but the thumbsticks have been vastly improved with sensors for a more accurate VR gaming experience.  The Touch controllers are intuitive and are supposed to help users naturally glide through virtual reality. Those who want to purchase the controllers can buy the 64GB Oculus Quest headset with Touch for $399.

Oculus also introduced a new resolution specter of 1600 x 1440 per eye, adding to what the company calls the “same best-of-class optics” as in Oculus Go. Oculus keeps comfort in mind, which is why lens spacing adjustment is available so the eyes will naturally adjust to the different elements. The built-in audio should deliver crisp and immersive sound with deep and dynamic bass, according to the press release.

The company also states in its blog post that with the Oculus Quest, the first generation of best-in-class VR headsets has come to an end, with the Oculus Go being the most comprehensive and inexpensive option to enjoy virtual reality, while the Oculus Rift is supposed to “push the limits of what’s possible.”

The Oculus Go is a very decent device for its price, but the Quest carries on and expands the possibilities to attract more people who want to get into VR with larger distances, more realistic scenery and better controls. Too bad we have to wait until March.
