Facebook Inc (FB) Announces Twitter-Like #Hashtags

Facebook’s Clickable Hashtags

The company says #hashtags have become an important part of online conversations and since members use hashtags on Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) organically, the social media giant decided to put the symbol into its actual design, i.e, clickable hashes.

“People were already using hashtags on Facebook — we just made the[m] clickable,”a spokesperson says.

“To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about,” Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s Greg Lindley wrote on the company’s blog today. “To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook.”

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) acknowledges that this isn’t a new idea at all, indicating that the hashtag function will be similar to Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram or Pinterest functions.

“To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook.” Lindley said.
