A Facebook malfunction led to the meeting of two strangers who eventually decided to marry. This is the story of Schuler Benson, who one day found himself logged into the Facebook account of a stranger due to a technical error.

How it all happened

The incident took place in 2009 when Benson opened his phone to log into his Facebook account. The application did not prompt him to enter his personal details, and once he was in, he realized that he had logged into the account of a complete stranger.

“I had to make several posts in order to find out I wasn’t logged into my own account. Turns out, I was in the account of a nice lady named Celeste [Zendler], who lived in Boulder, Colorado,” Benson said. Benson was unable to log off from her account for some unknown reason. For a complete week, he found himself logged into Celeste’s account.

Zendler and Benson were complete strangers who had never lived in the same state, had no mutual real life or online friends and did not share any Facebook interests. All this led to a lot of confusion, and both panicked a little for some time. Only after Zendler sent him a friend request did Benson manage to log out of her account from his phone. The couple remained in touch online for quite some time and discovered that they had a lot in common.

Facebook glitch can be beautiful too

In June 2013, they met in person, and later that year Zendler relocated from Colorado to Arkansas. On June 11, 2014, Schuler logged into Celeste’s Facebook account for the second time, but this time with a purpose. He wanted to propose to her at the place where they met for the first time, but since there was no such physical place as they met on Facebook, he used the same way that helped them meet for the first time. Benson “hacked” her account and posted an incredibly sweet proposal, which she accepted.

Benson saidthe simple glitch in social media helped him find his partner, his best friend and his great love. “There are awful things in this world, but sometimes there’s beauty, too. This is my beauty.”

The couple shared their heartwarming story on imgur.com.
