On June 14th, popular game creator company Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) will shutter three social games on Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) including The Sims Social, Pet Society, and SimCity Social.

The reason for closing up the aforementioned games is the fact that there aren’t too many people playing them anymore. Electronic Arts explained in their blog post, “After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off.  For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising.”

Fortunately, Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) will keep their most popular games like Solitaire Blitz and Bejeweled Blitz. The company still has plans to release the highly anticipated Plants vs. Zombies: Adventures.

Earlier this year, social media game giant Zynga shuttered three games including Party Friends, City Ville 2, and The Friend Game. In 2012, the company closed up eleven games: PetVille, Mafia Wars 2, Fishville, Vampire Wars, Treasure Isle, Forestville, Mafia Wars Shakedown, Word Scramble Challenge, Monotopia, and Mojitimo.

Perhaps all the game shutdowns signal a change in social media and online games. Some people have tired of social media and left Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) for real life. Others have tired of the games on Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). Technology trends are always changing and with all the choices offered in the market, it’s no wonder today’s social media users have a hard time keeping their focus on specific services or products. Today’s mobile and social media games are a dime a dozen. Although many games enjoy a peak period of popularity, some games never quite reach that pinnacle of success. It’s also possible that social gaming as a whole is in need of a makeover.  It also might not be a bad thing if Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) and Zynga Inc (NASDAQ:ZNGA) offered to sell some of these games as downloads for a small price.
