Why do people decide to get an app and what causes someone to put one on the Deleted Apps list? Some new data on the top

When you look on your smartphone, are there apps that you downloaded at one time that you have never used or never use anymore?  If you answered yes, know that you are not alone.  Recent survey data from Alligatortek shows that a majority of Americans tend to keep apps on their smartphones that they don’t use.

Alligatortek surveyed 2,000 Americans to see the most downloaded, the most deleted, and the least used apps on American’s smartphones.  According to the survey data, 63% of American smartphone users consciously keep apps on their smartphone that they don’t even use.  The found that they most downloaded apps are social media, email/communication and news and entertainment apps. The most deleted apps include fitness/health, productivity apps and smartphone apps. They compiled a list of the top 8 most most popular apps and most deleted apps measured by the number of downloads that can be seen in the infographic below.

What’s even more interesting is that 43% of smartphone users have deleted apps that they previously spent money to purchase.  We’re not talking about apps that are free to download, but aps that Americans actually paid for. Another interesting stat from the data is that 62% of smartphone users also re-download apps they’ve previously deleted. Millennials are also deleting apps 3.5 times more frequently than baby boomers.  Single people are also deleting apps 2 times more frequently than married people do.

Looking at the least used apps after downloading provides some interesting data around smartphone users.  Productivity apps are actually the least used apps after downloading, which shows that smartphone users have serious productivity issues.  The apps they are downloading to help with productivity, aren’t even being used. Fitness and health apps come in second showing that while people aspire to live healthier lives, they often don’t’ follow through with it.

They also looked at the top reasons smartphone users are actually deleting the apps on their phone.  43% of surveyed respondents said they deleted apps because they needed the extra space on their phone.  29% are trying to reduce the clutter on their phone.  26% got bored with the app and no longer had a use for it.  Surprisingly enough, only 3% of smartphone users were worried about the apps tracking or using their data.  43% of surveyed respondents also said they deleted apps they initially purchased, because they no longer had a need for them.  To see the full survey results, check out the infographic below
