A quiet, Colorado mountain community was awoken this morning to the sounds of gunshots that left a Park County, Colorado deputy dead along with the gunman. Two additional deputies were taken to a local hospital for gunshot wounds but it’s believed that neither suffered injuries that are life threatening.

The shooting occurred in the small town of Bailey, Colorado which is about 45 miles southwest of Denver.

Colorado Shooting – Details

The incident occurred in the Friendship Ranch subdivision of Bailey around 9:15 AM local time according to the Park County, Colorado sheriff’s department. Following the shooting, witnesses report that sheriff’s deputies could be seen cordoning off the area at the intersection of Pine Road and Pine Drive.

According to the sheriff’s department, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene but it still remains unknown if he was killed by the three deputies involved or chose to take his own life.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation have been called in to assist with the investigation given the limited resources of the Park Country sheriff’s department.

It’s believed that a Jefferson Country bomb squad was en route to the scene, though no further explanations or details were given.

The Park County website said that Platte Canyon High School and Fitzsimmons Middle School were placed on lockdown “for safety’s sake.”

Police plan to provide the public with more details when they hold a press conference at 12:30 PM local time.

If the sleepy Colorado community of Bailey, Colorado sounds familiar it will be to the residents’ chagrin. In 2006, Duane Morrison, a 53-year-old drifter, took several girls hostage in the town’s high school in 2006. Morrison sexually assaulted the girls while in discussions with the SWAT team.

Morrison killed one of the girls and then himself when the SWAT team stormed the classroom at Platte Canyon High School.
