Sony was the clear winner in the race between the original PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the PS4 has sold more than 40 million units since launch, the Xbox One lagged behind with about 20 million units. However, Microsoft’s latest console Xbox One S outsold the three-year-old PS4 in August. PS4 sales have slowed significantly in anticipation of the new consoles PlayStation 4 Pro and PS4 Slim.
Is PS4 Pro worth the higher price?
Heading into the crucial holiday shopping season, gaming enthusiasts may be wondering whether to buy the Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 Pro. Both consoles boast of 4K gaming and new designs, and the Xbox One S is cheaper than the PS4 Pro. But the PS4 Pro makes more sense to buy instead of Xbox One S, even if it means paying $100 extra.
The PlayStation 4 Pro comes with 4.14 teraflops of computing power. It is more than three times as powerful as Microsoft’s brand new console. Another reason is virtual reality. The Xbox One S is not going to get a VR headset anytime soon. In contrast, Sony is gearing up to release the PlayStation VR on October 13. More than 50 gaming titles will also be available during the VR headset’s launch window.
PlayStation 4 Pro looks more future-proof
More importantly, as Erik Kain of Forbes points out, the PlayStation 4 Pro is more future-proof than Xbox One S. Microsoft has already revealed that it would release a more powerful and advanced console called Project Scorpio in the second half of 2017. It means the current Xbox One S will be outdated in one year. But if you go for the PlayStation 4 Pro, it will remain good for at least a few years.
Eventually, it comes down to what titles you like, and the consoles your friends play on. If your friends are on Xbox, it makes little sense to go to the PlayStation Network, and vice versa. No matter which one you like, get ready for some exciting deals as the holiday shopping season is approaching.
