BlackBerry, Nokia Won’t Launch 5-Inch Phones Soon

Updated on

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB), Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) won’t be launching any 5-inch smartphones until later this year or early next year, according to a report by Daniel Shen and Steve Shen in DigiTimes.

BlackBerry, Nokia Won’t Launch 5-Inch Phones Soon

BlackBerry 5-inch screen coming in December quarter

They cite sources who say that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) will release a 5-inch smartphone in the fourth quarter of this year. The handset is expected to be the BlackBerry A10.

The 5-inch handset segment is beginning to be more and more crowded. Motorola has two 5-inch models available in the U.S. Other companies like Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) and HTC have already released 5-inch handsets.

BlackBerry A10 photos leaked

Some alleged photos of BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s A10 handset were posted recently on Tinhte, a Vietnamese website, and written about by Know Your Mobile. The design of the smartphone is quite similar to that of the BlackBerry Z10, and it’s believed to be a prototype. The allegedly leaked photos indicate that the device is 5 inches in size.

Twitter user @nvthanh1994 also posted some alleged images of the BlackBerry A10. Interestingly enough, the Twitter user is also from Vietnam.

Nokia’s 5-inch handset expected this year

DigiTimes’ sources claim that Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) is expected to release a larger Windows 8 handset by the end of this year. The company’s 4.7-inch Lumia 625 was just unveiled last week. Currently this is the largest phone in Nokia’s lineup.

Rumors about Nokia’s next handsets have been running wild over the past year. You could say that Nokia’s next handsets are the worst kept secret in tech world. We knew a lot about the Lumia 625 and the Lumia 1020 before they were ever released, so perhaps these rumors about a 5-inch Windows Phone are accurate as well.

Apple might not release one any time soon

The sources who spoke to DigiTimes also indicated that the chances that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will release a 5-inch iPhone either later this year or even in the first half of next year are slim.
