Beyond Coal: A game changer in the transition from coal to clean energy

The coal industry has had a tight grip on U.S. energy policy for decades, with devastating consequences for both public health and our environment. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, we’re helping to end America’s reliance on dirty coal and shift the U.S. Power sector to a cleaner future. Bloomberg Philanthropies has invested $80 million with the Sierra Club to retire half of the nation’s coal fleet by 2017. The Sierra Club is currently on schedule to meet this goal—187 plants have already announced their retirement as of April 2015. The initiative is one of the most effective campaigns to cut carbon emissions in history.
