It won’t be long before Nokia X and Windows Phone users will be able to download BlackBerry Messenger on their smartphones. This is a huge move for the struggling Canadian tech giant, especially considering BBM is primarily the company’s only successful service.

BBM Gets Software Improvements

Recently, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) updated their messenger to include some useful new features and tools. One of the most notable features include BBM Chats, which allows users to communicate in real time and share photos/videos/voice messages/notes with friends. There is also BBM Voice, which allows users to talk and make free long distance calls; Video Chat for face-to-face calls; and BBM Channels that allow users to communicate via personalized social networking pages. There is also a one-click sharing feature and new emoticons.

BBM will launch for Windows Phone this summer and Nokia X when that phone arrives.

The company’s president for Global Enterprise Solutions explained, “BBM continues to grow in popularity as millions of people use our mobile platform for chatting and connecting with friends or colleagues, and we are very excited that we will soon welcome Windows Phone and Nokia X users to the BBM community.”

Nokia’s vice president and general manager of developer relations added, “Today marks an exciting moment for Nokia. By bringing BBM to the Windows Phone and Nokia X communities, our customers will be able to experience this popular global messaging app.”

BlackBerry Messenger has come a long way from it’s debut in 2005. Even though it was essentially just another mobile instant messaging platform, it’s been one of the most successful messaging platforms to date. Although the company formerly known as Research In Motion has been struggling to sell their phones with competition all thanks to the likes of Apple and Samsung, it has continued to successfully peddle it’s messenger.

BlackBerry CEO Considers The Possibility Of Selling BBM

Could the success of the messenger service inspire BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) to sell BBM? The tech company’s CEO John sees it as a real possibility. He recently told Bloomberg News, “Running a public company, anything to help our shareholders I need to take a very serious look at. Today I think we need to build up that base and build up the innovation model.”

Chen remains to keep his focus on the instant messaging service and for good reason. He just unveiled a new encrypted version of BlackBerry Messenger, specifically aimed for customers who want security. He thinks it will be huge.
