Atari’s upcoming console Ataribox was first teased at E3 when a YouTube video showed the console housed in wood. Since then, not much information has been revealed, until now. The gaming company has now shared the outer look and a few other details about its upcoming console.

What we know about Ataribox so far

In June, the company posted a video with the title “First look: A brand new Atari product. Years in the making.” The video had glimpses of the console, which now has been revealed in full.

Atari sent an email to fans saying, “Our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.’ The Atari 2600 came with wood, and now the same classic wood will be there in the new Ataribox.

Atari’s new console has ribbed lines, a raised back and a front panel made of either wood or glass. There is an indicator light as well that glows through these materials. The device supports SD cards and has four USB ports and an HDMI port as well. There will be two versions of the Ataribox available: black/red and a wood edition, notes The Verge.

Nintendo offers classic gaming content with its NES and SNES Classic Mini retro consoles. Atari also plans to offer the same on Ataribox, along with current gaming content.

The gaming company does have a decent library of titles, ranging from the arcade classic Centipede to Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch.

Further, the console has a LAN Ethernet port on the rear, suggesting it might link to a cloud gaming platform as a streaming device as well, notes Pocket-lint.

Atari very cautious this time

Fans will surely have many questions as of now, but the company has no plans to reveal everything at once.

“We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so,” the gaming company said.

The company added that it will face many milestones, decisions and challenges in the coming months and will offer more information and status updates on it all. By revealing information step by step, the company wants to ensure that it does everything right this time. Its last console, the Atari Jaguar, did not sell well despite being marketed as the first 64-bit console.

We will have to wait for few weeks at least before the company announces pricing, availability and the game list for the Ataribox. It is also very likely that the company has not finalized many of those things yet and is planning to first get feedback from the community on every single announcement. Though there is a website for the Ataribox, it only has a short teaser video for the console.
