Apple’s Donations To (RED) In Fighting AIDS Top $70 Million

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the companies committed to supporting (RED), a charitable organization dedicated in fighting AIDS founded by Bono and Bobby Shiver in 2006. The tech giant has been a supporter of (RED) since its establishment and raised a huge amount of money compared with other companies involved in the cause.

(RED) announced in its account on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) that the contribution of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to its cause reached $70 million. Its donation to the charity increased by $5 million since September last year. The tech giant started contributing for the cause when it introduces its special Product (RED) iPod and accessories.

According to (RED)’s website, the amount of money raised to date totals more than $240 million through events and sale of (RED) products from leading brands including Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) and The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) among others. The organization uses 100% of the donations on the ground to help those afflicted with HIV and AIDs.

Apple design chief helps design products for (RED) benefit auction

Jony Ive, the design chief of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) collaborated with fellow industrial designer Mac Newson in designing a number of unique products for a (RED) benefit auction. Some of the items they designed for the benefit auction include a rose gold Apple EarPods, a red Mac Pro and a completely custom Leica Digital Rangefinder.

The Product (RED) Mac Pro and EarPod were sold for more than $1.4 million, which was higher than the amount they expected. The cylindrical Mac Pro, which sold for almost $1 million, is officially listed as the most expensive desktop personal computer ever sold.

Currently, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is selling Product (RED) ipod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod touch, iPad mini Smart Cover, iPad mini Smart Case, iPad Air Smart Cover, iPad Air Smart Case, iPhone 4S bumper and iPhone 5S Case.

The tech giant donates a portion of the gross profits from the sale of the items included in the Product (RED) line to the Global Fund to help fund programs to fight AIDS in Africa.
