Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has recalled some of the older iPhone chargers it shipped to Europe. The company has recalled the 5W USB power adapter that shipped with iPhones between October 2009 and September 2012 due to overheating risks.
Details on Apple’s recall
In a statement on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s website, the company stated that the recall covers 37 countries in Europe. Apple said “in rare cases,” the adapters it is recalling could overheat and “pose a safety risk.” The adapters that are covered under the recall shipped with the European models of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Apple also sold some of the adapters in question as a standalone accessory.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) said the recall is voluntary and that it is replacing all of the affected power adapters for a redesigned adapter for free. The company emphasized that only the 5W USB power adapters shipped with the three models listed above between October 2009 and September 2012 are covered by the recall.
How to figure out if your iPhone adapter is part of the recall
In order to determine whether your iPhone adapter is covered by the recall, check the numbers located between the adapter’s prongs. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has included pictures here on its website to guide consumers in figuring out whether their adapter is being recalled.
The affected adapters have a label that reads “Model A1300” in smaller gray print on the top right-hand corner of the adapter and larger letters “CE,” also in gray, printed prominently in between the prongs of the adapter. The redesigned adapters are Model A1400.
How to exchange recalled iPhone adapters
Those who have an adapter that’s part of the recall should take it to an Apple Retail store. They can make an appointment on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s website. Consumers can also take it to a participating Apple Authorized Service Provider. Those who can’t take their adapters to one of these two places can arrange an exchange with Apple Technical Support.
In order to exchange their adapters, consumers must bring their iPhone with them so Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) representatives can verify the handset’s serial number.
