Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was recently granted another patent for iPhone users on-the-go. The patent was recently granted to Apple by United States Patent Trade.

A look at the new patent

This new patent was designed to cut down on reckless driving. This patent would utilize information from onboard sensors and the phone’s accelerometer to determine if the car is in motion. This allows the drivers to lock or unlock features accordingly. There are a few cars that already have features which are similar with onboard features. One example of such a feature includes the prevention of the distracting process of pairing up the Bluetooth phone with the car.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s version could possibly use direct input from a car in order to determine if the car is moving or not. TechCrunch added, “There’s also a provision described that would make it possible for the device to be used in a car by someone other than the driver. This feature is described as using visual input (i.e. a photo from the iPhone’s camera) to determine who’s a driver and who’s not behind the wheel, and then using its sensor data to determine where in the vehicle it’s being used. If used by a passenger, functions would unlock and be available for use.”

Apple could improve features for better security

This system also goes beyond driving as it shows provisions for similarly-functioning features in parental security mode. This allows certain functions like SMS to require password or authentication. Apple already offers something similar by allowing users to lock out specific functions on their smartphones with a passcode. It is a real possibility Apple will work within the range of these functions.

The iPhone is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s most successful gadget to date and iOS is the company’s most successful operating system to date. It is not surprising the company is looking for ways to expand on their mobile products, which are key to future success.
