Apple Inc. May Upgrade iBeacon In WWDC 2014

Updated on

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will reveal more details about its iBeacon technology during WWDC 2014, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The company will showcase iBeacon by rigging transmitters throughout the Moscone Center, and offering a session for developers on how to use the technology for their apps and services.

Greater importance of iBeacon

As of now, there are no details over the probable iBeacon upgrade, but the company may increase the importance of iBeacon in iOS 8 along with entering into new partnerships with other companies.  Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) might also make iBeacon compatible with the much awaited mobile payment service.

Only last year, the iPhone maker rolled out the iBeacon on iOS devices, where wireless communication is possible with the physical beacons through Bluetooth, and user can take advantage of apps and services when he or she is physically nearby.  In February, Apple released the iBeacon “Made for iPhone” specification, suggesting greater use of technology in its devices.

A number of companies has integrated iBeacon technology in various ways. For instance, the shopping app shopkick and Macy’s incorporated the technology into retail stores to assist consumers. Also, Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association have integrated the technology to offer viewers an improved live experience.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has integrated iBeacons in its retail locations, which deliver messages about taking online orders and store events. The initial feedback about the technology was mixed. The technology has also been introduced in the UK, where it was integrated in a cafe and London’s Heathrow Airport to notify users of promotional deals.

Other expected updates from Apple

Aside from iBeacon technology, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is all set to release iOS 8, OS X 10.10, a new home automation platform, and maybe some new hardware. At 10 a.m. local time, an Apple executive–most probably CEO Tim Cook–will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address.

Other features that are supposed to be launched during the WWDC are Healthbook, Maps update, split screen for iPad, Siri improvements, Wild Cards, Air Drop to iOS, better multi monitor support, smart home initiatives, as well as the iWatch and other hardware.

On Friday, Apple shares closed down 0.37% to end the day at $633.
