Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has announced that content downloads from iTunes U have passed one billion. This is the second major milestone for iTunes in the past month.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced earlier this month that the iTunes Store itself passed the 25 billion song mark.
The tech giant said iTunes U is the largest online catalog of free educational content in the world. The content comes from a variety of the world’s best schools, prominent libraries, museums and educational organizations. Educators around the globe use the content to create educational materials for students who use iOS devices.
Eddy Cue, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said there are now some iTunes U courses which have over 250,000 students enrolled in them.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) also reports that more than 1,200 universities and colleges and 1,200 K-12 schools and districts host thousands of courses on a broad range of subjects, from art to science.
Leading universities like Duke, Yale, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge have enrolled over 100,000 students in courses through iTunes U. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports that Stanford and The Open University have each passed more than 60 million downloads of content from iTunes U. The company also said that more than 60 percent of iTunes downloads come from outside the U.S., so schools can share their content with people all over the world.
Educators are able to create courses in iTunes U in 30 different countries. Four new countries were just added to the list, Turkey, South Korea, United Arab Emirates and Brazil. The content can be accessed in 155 different countries, and there are now more than 75,000 educational apps that can be downloaded on iOS devices.
