The vice president of American Airlines’ Operation Technology Patrick O’Keefe said, “We’ve reduced the single biggest source of pilot injuries: carrying those packs. And we are now able to save $1 million in fuel costs and stop printing all the page revisions.”

O’Keefe spoke at the TabTimes Tablet Strategy conference in New York. He mentioned that all 8,600 of his company’s pilots will get iPads by the end of the month.

Last year, AA started utilizing the iPad in all phases of flight. Interestingly enough, the airline is the only carrier in the world that has permission to let pilots carry tablets and the iPad is the only tablet that’s approved by the Federal Aviation Administration to be used an as electronic flight bag.

American Airlines distributed about 16,000 Samsung Galaxy Notes to the crew members and flight attendants who utilized the devices for work.
