The iPhone’s mapping app has been at least partially corrected today. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has reportedly made certain corrections to its iPhone maps, which created a life-threatening situation inside an Australian park.
As ValueWalk reported earlier today, motorists inside Murray-Sunset National Park have been getting lost because their iPhones were giving them incorrect information about the location of the town of Mildura. There is no water supply inside the park, and numerous drivers have become stranded inside the park after getting lost, because they were following their iPhone’s directions.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s much-hated mapping app showed Mildura more than 40 miles away from where it actually is. Mildura is actually located outside the park. The app did correctly place Mildura airport on its maps, but the location of the airport was not an option for motorists who simply searched for Mildura. Police sergeant Stephen Phelan told The Guardian that they had “at least four documented cases” of people becoming lost and stranded inside the park.
At least one person was stranded for a whole day in the park in temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit. After Mildura Police contacted Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) about the life-threatening situation created by the erroneous iPhone mapping app, the tech giant corrected the location of the town of Mildura in the app.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been under fire ever since iOS 6 and its new mapping app came out, because of the app’s incorrect information and lack of features. Since iOS came out, iPhone users in the U.K. have also reported some major erroneous “information” provided by Apple Maps. Apparently the app gave Dublin an airport that doesn’t really exist and painted some parts of Scotland black and white in its satellite images. The BBC also reports that Apple Maps placed a museum in a river and is simply missing key cities, like Stratford-upon-Avon.
The tech giant said it has been making strides to correct the problematic app, and it has fired some of the managers who handled the development of the app. The iPhone previously used Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps, but after Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) launched iOS 6 in September, it dumped Google Maps in favor of Apple’s newly designed mapping app.
