Apple Inc. (AAPL) Deal With PrimeSense Confirmed By Irate Investor

Updated on

Earlier today we reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was said to have sealed the deal with PrimeSense to acquire the Israeli sensor maker. Now it sounds like that pending acquisition has been confirmed inadvertently by a PrimeSense investors who threatened the person who tipped off the media.

PrimeSense is credited with making the original sensor for the Xbox 360’s Kinect. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) apparently plans to buy the company for $345 million.

Apple said to be planning PrimeSense acquisition

Julie Bort of Business Insider reports that Izhar Shay, who has a general partner at Canaan Partners, a venture capital firm, wrote a nasty post on Facebook about the leak. It looks like Shay removed the post from Facebook, although the damage has already been done. It was written in Hebrew, but Business Insider translated it.

In that post, Shay claimed that the leak could have killed the deal between Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and PrimeSense, although it didn’t, at least so far. He said the leaker “almost succeeded in ruining the incomes of hundreds of people and their families” and expressed his hope that the deal would not end up falling through as a result of the leak. He also threatened to expose the person who leaked the story, saying that he thinks he knows who the person is.

Apparently there were replies posted on that comment which confirmed that he was referring to PrimeSense. Also since he is on record as an investor in PrimeSense, this is a pretty logical conclusion.

Apple and PrimeSense not talking

Apparently PrimeSense has issued a statement which isn’t much of a denial and sort of suggests that the company has no comment on the matter. It also referred to reports of the deal as “a recycled rumor.” Reports that Apple was talking to PrimeSense about acquiring it first circulated in July.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is known for playing things pretty close to the chest, so it probably isn’t happy that there was a leak. However, the company really shouldn’t be surprised by this. It wouldn’t be the first time something like this got out ahead of time. After all, the company’s “secrets” about its upcoming product refreshes are some of the worst kept secrets in the tech industry.
