Android 8.0 Oreo arrived only a few months ago, but Google has already announced that Android 8.1 Oreo is to come out in a few weeks.

Yesterday Google published a post about the Pixel Visual Core, a system-on-chip which is supposed to enhance and speed up image processing on Google’s next smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. In addition to this detail, Google mentioned that the next software update, Android Oreo 8.1, is to arrive in the coming weeks. However, Google noted that this is the developer preview. It is important to note that Google’s Pixel smartphones will be the first to get it.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll enable Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in the developer preview of Android Oreo 8.1 (MR1),” the company said in its blog post about the Pixel Visual Core. “Later, we’ll enable it for all third-party apps using the Android Camera API, giving them access to the Pixel 2’s HDR+ technology. We can’t wait to see the beautiful HDR+ photography that you already get through your Pixel 2 camera become available in your favorite photography apps.”

The Pixel Visual Core is Google’s custom-designed SoC, and it is to make an appearance on the Pixel 2 line-up and their successors as well. Google is rolling out the following update in order to enable other applications to use the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL’s camera to shoot HDR+ quality snaps. Moreover, the feature should fasten image processing, as mentioned above.

Unfortunately, it is still unclear whether the Android 8.1 Oreo update will bring more features. However, if the MR1 for Android 8.1 will be similar to the Android 7.1 Nougat update, we are going to see many new features.

We will let you know when the details regarding the Android 8.1 Oreo update emerge. Until then, what do you think about the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
