The AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor will go on sale later this month, the chip maker announced today. The new Ryzen line-up includes two eight-core models with 16 threads and two six-core models with 12 threads, and the company said all of them are big upgrades from the first-gen models and feature its advanced “SenseMI technology.” The announcement comes a year after the first-generation Ryzen chip line-up was released.

AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor announced

In a press release today, the company said all of its AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processors feature its new X470 chipset, which it escribes as “the most advanced, optimized, and efficient chipset to-date for socket AM4.” The new chipset is designed to support the increased clock speeds that are supported by the second-generation Ryzen line-up.

The processors will be accompanied by new motherboards from manufacturers such as ASUS, MSI, ASRock and Gigabyte that are equipped with the X470 chipsets. AMD is also shipping its AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processors with Wraith coolers included. The Ryzen 7 will come with the new Wraith Prism cooler, which is designed for better cooling capabilities than the Wraith Max.

Those who want to be among the first to receive an AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor can preorder one today at multiple retailers and PC manufacturers.

Details on the AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor line-up

All the AMD Ryzen 2nd gen processor models will be manufactured using a 12-nanometer fab processor, which is a slight improvement from the 14-nanometer process used for their predecessors.

The chips will start shipping on April 19. The highest-end Ryzen 7 processor will sell for $329, while the Ryzen 7 2700 will be priced at $299. The second-gen Ryzen 7 2700X features boosts up to 4.3GHz with a base speed of 2.7GHz, both of which are faster clock speeds than its predecessor. The new Wraith Prism cooler that comes with it also features RGB lighting. The Ryzen 7 2700’s clock speeds are a significant jump from the first-generation model, as the boost goes up to 4.1GHz on a 3.2GHz base.

The Ryzen 5 2600X will sell for $229, while the lowest-end Ryzen 5 2600 is priced at $199. Both Ryzen 5 2nd gen processors also feature higher clock speeds, with the 2600X boosting up to 4.2GHz off a 3.6GHz base. The Ryzen 5 2600 offer a 3.9GHz boost with a base of 3.4GHz.
